Online Urban Forestry Images (05-DG-11244225-194)

Grant Number
05-DG-11244225-194

This project created one of the first collections to systematically catalog a large collection of land use and urban design images.

The Design Center Image Bank is one of the largest free online image collections on the internet. Approximately 26,000 photos are available for free. This is one of the first collections to systematically catalog a large collection of land use and urban design images. This proposal will: (1) create ten onlin e slide shows linked to downloadable images in the image bank to provide easy access for professionals and civic groups interested in locating images that can demonstrate the value of urban forestry and (2) develop a page linked to other collections of urban forestry-related images.

Project objectives:

This proposal is to:

A.Create 10 online slide shows each with at least 30 images from the Design Center Image Bank collection, linked to the larger database for easy downloading. Thirty-one such shows are already online. This will involve adding at least 200 new images of urban forest resources outside of Minnesota.

B.A second product will be a page of web links to other image collections. These other collections are generally smaller, more expensive, or less searchable than the Design Center Image Bank, however this web page will be something of a one-stop-shop for urban forestry images.

It will meet these objectives through 3 steps:

A.Selection of topics: To identify topics for the slide shows we will conduct a focus group of professionals and civic leaders in the areas of urban forestry, parks, landscape architecture.

B.Collection and cataloging of at least 200 new images: Many of the images will come from our collection. However, at least half the images will be new images from other locations that we will scan, catalog, and place in our Image Bank. They will be selected to expand our geographical scope.

C.Development of ten online slide shows and one-stop-shop web link page.

D.Distribution.
