The Street Tree/Utility Easement Conflict (03-DG-11083150-280)
03-DG-11083150-280
This project was developed to help educate urban designers in the conflict between urban tree planting and overhead utility easements.
A CD containing templates for publications, posters, and PowerPoint presentations, along with a model for developing a utility line arboretum, was developed to educate all parties affected by the conflict between street trees and overhead utility easements. This CD, along with various printed materials, was distributed to all State Urban Forestry Coordinators, to the Utility Arborists Association, and to requesting utility companies and municipal arborists, for their use in customizing these educational materials for regional use.
Project Objectives:
1.Bring attention to the challenge of selecting appropriate species of trees for use in or near utility easements, and to identify characteristics of trees that are appropriate and inappropriate for use in or near overhead utility lines.
2.Identify options for dealing with the street tree/utility easement conflict.
3. Produce educational materials to support 1 and 2:
•A template for a basic publication on the street tree/utility line conflict. Providing a template would allow individual states or associations to add trees appropriate for their geographic locations.
•A PowerPoint presentation on said conflict. This presentation could likewise be modified depending upon the intended audience, etc.
•A template for a poster about said conflict. The poster would be in a form (PowerPoint) that would permit individual modification as needed.
•A design model and budget for installing a utility line arboretum for use in screening utility-appropriate trees for a given geographic location (to be based on the successful utility line arboretum at Virginia Tech's Hampton Roads Agricultural Research and Extension Center).
