Creating a politically and ecologically sustainable urban forestry program: a case study from the city of Bellevue, Washington

Reference Type
Conference Proceedings (Chapter)

"Across the country it is common for local parks and recreation departments to be the largest landowners within city limits. However, it is quite uncommon for city governments to have active land stewardship programs. Bellevue, Washington has been developing a comprehensive urban forestry and land stewardship program for over a decade. A case study of the City of Bellevues community and urban forestry program will be presented to share technique essential in creating a truly sustainable program. The Bellevue story is unique, since the City integrates political and ecological principles to preserve and maintain a local community’s urban forests. To ensure long-term success, community and urban forestry programs must be sustainable, both politically and ecologically." [Abstract]
