This factsheet provides a brief description of types of tree damage and the compartmentalization that follows. The area that becomes damaged on a tree becomes the point of infection. Compartmentalization occurs just outside of the stained regions. Although decay decreases timber value, it also creates wildlife habitat and is a part of nutrient cycling in wooded areas.
