Rhizosphaera Needlecast
This factsheet contains information on the introduction, environment, symptoms, survival and dispersal and control of Rhizosphaera Needlecast, a fungus that effects spruce and fir.
Rhizosphaera Needlecast is a fungus that can cause extensive defoliation of spruce and fir, especially where these trees are grown out of their natural range. Colorado blue spruce is especially susceptible to infection, but most spruces and true firs can sustain some damage. Damage in Christmas tree plantations can be extensive. Losses are due mainly to lower tree market values due to needle casting, but tree vigor is also reduced and successive years of defoliation can lead to death of the tree.
