Wild Apple Trees for Wildlife

This factsheet includes information on where apples come from, managing wild apple trees for wildlife, cultivating apple trees for wildlife, other ways to improve habitat around wild apple trees, how wildlife will use the wild apple trees and other cultivated fruit-bearing trees and shrubs.

Apple trees are important for wildlife in Maine and all the New England state. This region is fortunate to have many apple trees growing in the wild but, for a variety of reasons, a lot of these trees are being lost each year.  This factsheet provides a systematic way to restore and care for apple trees, to enable them to thrive and provide food and other habitat resources for wildlife.  We include information on some of the many birds, mammals, and insects that use apple trees and the clearings around them.
